Not That Basic
A big picture documentary on how basic income addresses global exploitation, inequality and the environmental crisis.
Feature Length Documentary
Focusing on the everyday lives of people around the world, from different cultural and economic backgrounds, “Not That Basic” will investigate the impact of basic income on individuals and communities.
There are three pillars of sustainability.
- Economic sustainability
- Social sustainability
- Environmental sustainability
In this film we are going to look at how UBI impacts all three of them.
The western and non-western stories behind the results of the trials, combined with the experts talking about the bigger picture about UBI and how it fits into the context of the current economy and how it will be changed into a system that can be more sustainable for society.

MISSION
The world needs a new narrative—one that challenges conventional thinking and invites us to see the economy through a radically different lens.
Our mission is to reframe the conversation around Universal Basic Income (UBI) by placing it in the context it truly deserves: a deep understanding of how the economy actually functions. Only when we grasp the real mechanics of our economic system can we fully appreciate the transformative potential of UBI.
APPROACH
We begin with the household—where resources are shared equally and fairness feels natural. Through interviews with families across economic classes, we explore how that sense of fairness unravels as we zoom out to the village and national level. By contrasting personal realities with systemic structures, we reveal how UBI challenges our assumptions about value, equality, and what it means to build an economy that works for everyone.
Through these personal stories and contrast them with the structural economic realties, we reveal how UBI fits into this larger picture. Not as a simple fix, but as a reframing of what fairness could mean when we start seeing society as an interconnected whole—an extended household where everyone has a place, and everyone deserves enough to live.
